Thank you for those kind comments Jane. I use one brush for the photoshop paintings, but alter the size of the brush quite a bit throughout so I can bring out small details in some areas. I'm taking my time with the oils currently, going back to basics and painting colour charts and practising life drawing, etc, so I have a decent foundation to draw from instead of diving straight in. I have tried acrylics years ago, but didn't really get on with them as I prefer the slow drying of oils, as I like being able to lift the paint off or blend it hours after I first apply it. Good luck with your work, keep painting! :)

Hi
I googled "Russell Brand painting" and your painting stood out amongst all the rest for likeness and quality. I work in acrylic but have always been tempted to work in Photoshop but never knew where to start. Have you used just the one brush through out these paintings. They are brilliant, I would love to see your oil work!. Have you tried acrylics, they are so much faster and with gloss medium they go on like oil and dry a bit slower than normal. I have read your comments and agree that tonal values are of utmost importance to achieve form which will give the image likeness.' keep up the good work

Howdy! I know this is kinda off topic however , I'd figured I'd ask. Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest writing a blog article or vice-versa? My blog covers a lot of the same topics as yours and I feel we could greatly benefit from each other. If you might be interested feel free to send me an e-mail. I look forward to hearing from you! Fantastic blog by the way!

ahaha, I like your thinking... tactical elimination of one's peers! I'll give them hell, don't worry. Glad you found the talk useful and I'm glad you like the work. Gutted I didn't get a photo of all your beaming little faces for the blog :)

Mr Hughes,
I thought I would leave my mark and say that I found the talk rather interesting and highly motivational, don't feel bad about saying it how it is (maybe only four out of the class will make it, but I'm confident that everyone will bloody well try!). Thanks for taking the time to speak to us and also as a favour, crush their spirits next year....there is enough competition as it is! :D

also, loving the artwork and I wish you all the best in the future!

Thanks both of you for, those kind remarks. I'm pretty frantic this week with work (and a mountain bike trip) but will have a right old root around your websites/blogs when I get a chance, I've had a brief look already but not a proper sit down session with a cuppa :)
Carly, a crappy job may be a necessity for a bit, (Like me working at Dominos) but never lose sight of the grand prize and never settle, or give up, until you literally can't bear it anymore. Then keep going a bit longer, then consider quitting again, then don't, keep going a teeny bit longer, then jack it in. Then try again.

I second that, it was really helpful and has given me motivation to push for commissions first before I settle for a crappy job!

Great talk that really showed the reality of commercial illustration. It was good to know this early to develop a style and artwork that is commercially viable and push it forward to specific companies (although those portraits you did were awesome). After working on several commissions over the past year I understand the need to get out there and find the work but, to make it as a freelance illustrator full-time, I think your advice on finding jobs was golden. A lot of effort, self motivation and self promotion seems to be required so I understood why you said only 4 of us will make it...as it's not only down to the quality of the illustrations but the ability to push ourselves down this career path and become a success. Thanks a lot of coming! Really think it was the eye opener I needed =]
